The development of charging infrastructure is a key prerequisite for the market ramp-up of electric vehicles. The goals of the German government envisage an expansion of the charging infrastructure to 43,000 charging points (36,000 normal and 7,000 fast charging points) by 2020. The coalition agreement between the CDU/CSU and the SPD for the current legislative period specifies the target of 100,000 additional charging points.
On 13 February 2017, the charging infrastructure funding guideline came into force as part of the federal government's electric mobility market incentive programme. By the end of 2020, the BMVI will make 300 million euros available for the construction of public charging infrastructure for the establishment of 5,000 fast-charging and 10,000 normal charging stations. The substantial demand in the first two calls for funding and the many discussions with the various players at numerous events show that there is still a very high need to acquire knowledge in the area of the comprehensive development of a nationwide public charging infrastructure.
Over the coming years, the supra-regional accompanying research on charging infrastructure should now yield reliable scientific, technical and economic findings on charging infrastructure and thus impart a further noticeable boost to the topic. This will also serve to ensure an even more efficient and targeted implementation of funding measures for charging infrastructure.
The main focus of the accompanying research on charging infrastructure lies in the monitoring of the operational and master data from the charging infrastructure funding guideline; the technical issues; the investigation of different charging scenarios; and the development and evaluation of strategic approaches for the comprehensive, nationwide expansion of publicly accessible charging infrastructure. Furthermore, a prognosis regarding the demand for public charging infrastructure for the period after 2025 is to be developed.
In the accompanying research, this will be closely coordinated with the findings generated by the site tool for infrastructures for alternative fuels.
